In 2000, direct medical costs for chronic conditions totaled $510 billion. These costs are expected to double to more than $1 trillion by 2020 — accounting for 80% of direct medical expenditures. Health care costs for people with a chronic condition average $6,032, which is five times higher than for those without such a condition.
